Biography
Professor Yang Wang serves in the position of Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Advancement) and Chair Professor at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He is an internationally respected scholar in mathematics, with research interests encompassing both pure mathematics and interdisciplinary applications, having authored more than 150 academic publications.
In 2014, Professor Wang joined The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as the Chair Professor. He served in various leadership roles, including Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dean of the School of Science, and Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. During his tenure, Professor Wang played a key role in the establishment of the Guangzhou campus and cofounded the HKUST Big Data Institute, where he introduced the popular Master of Science degree program in Big Data Technology, significantly fostering the development of big data science professionals in Hong Kong.
Professor Wang graduated with a bachelor's degree from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and later obtained his PhD, also in mathematics, from Harvard University in 1990. He started his academic career as Assistant Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology where he rose through the academic ranks to Full Professor in 2000. Prior to joining HKUST, he was Department Chair of Mathematics at Michigan State University. Professor Wang also served as a program director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the United States.
In recent years, Professor Wang, as the Chief Scientist of the Institute of Web 3.0 Hong Kong, has played a pivotal role in advancing Hong Kong's Web3 technology ecosystem and driving innovations in AI education. Through his column “Yang Wang’s Mathematical Prism” in FT Chinese (Financial Times Chinese), he seeks to invigorate Hong Kong’s digital economy and promote cutting-edge technology initiatives, positioning the city as a prominent hub for technology and innovation.

汪揚教授現任香港大學副校長(大學拓展)及講座教授,是國際知名的數學學者,研究領域涵蓋純數學與跨學科應用,已發表學術論文超過150篇。
汪教授於2014年赴港加入香港科技大學擔任講座教授,歷任數學系系主任、理學院院長以及副校長(大學拓展)。任內主導籌建科大廣州校園,及聯合創立大數據研究所,並開設廣受歡迎的大數據科技理學碩士課程,為香港培養了一批大數據科學領域的專業人才。
學術背景方面,汪教授本科畢業於中國科學技術大學數學系,並於1990年在哈佛大學獲得博士學位。他在喬治亞理工學院開始了他的學術生涯,從助理教授逐步晉升,於2000年成為正教授,展現了卓越的學術成就。赴港前,他曾任密西根州立大學數學系主任,並擔任美國國家科學基金會(NSF)課程主任,累積了豐富的學術管理與科研政策制定經驗。
近年,汪教授作為香港Web3.0協會的首席科學家,積極推動香港在Web3技術生態和人工智能教育創新方面的發展。他在《FT中文網》 (Financial Times Chinese) 開設的專欄《汪揚的數學稜鏡》,旨在為香港的數字經濟與前沿科技建設注入新動力,助力香港成為重要的科技與創新樞紐。
