I hope you’ve been having a good summer!

This month the University had the pleasure of conferring degrees on some of the Class of 2022 who have completed their studies with us. At the same time, we know there are many secondary students who have their eyes firmly fixed on the future, awaiting (with bated breath, I suspect!) the release of the HKDSE Examination results, and hoping to join us at HKU in September.

I too have been keeping my eye on the future. The past few years have taught me that, even if the entire world seems to have ground to a halt, staying focused on moving ahead, and taking action to get there, can be a positive force in one’s life.

At HKU, we must continue to innovate, to grow and to expand our impact, so that the University can keep our unique position. To do this, I will continue to focus on our people, our resources and our campus development.

A globally leading university requires world class people whose creativity will multiply and produce ground-breaking, transformative results. This is true for both faculty and students, so we will keep recruiting academics – those at the top of their game as well as rising stars – and also outstanding students, brimming with potential, from all over the world.

On campus, our Tech Landmark project is in full swing, and our development projects off-campus are progressing apace as well, including the Pokfield Complex, around the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, new residential halls and of course our expansive HKU-Shenzhen campus.

Our performance in local competitive funding exercises continued to be the best in Hong Kong last year, and I am confident that this success will drive us to continue to stay ahead of the game. We will continue to grasp opportunities to take advantage of cross-border collaborative funding sources, while fostering an ever stronger fundraising culture as well.

We have a lot happening at HKU and I look forward to being able to share more of my thoughts with you in the future, about our future.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and I’ll be in touch with you again around the start of the new academic year!
