The University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (28 October) marked a significant milestone in preserving its heritage with the grand opening of the HKU History Gallery, a dedicated space chronicling the University’s illustrious journey since its founding in 1911.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Dr Peter Wong, Chairman of HKU Council; Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU; Dr Colin Lam Ko-yin, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Henderson Land Development Company and benefactor of the Gallery; and Ms Flora Ng, Chief Information Officer & University Librarian of HKU, who delivered remarks celebrating this historic occasion.
A Legacy Preserved
Located on the ground floor of the Chi Wah Learning Commons on HKU’s Centennial Campus, the Gallery was made possible through the generous support of Dr Colin Lam Ko-yin, a distinguished HKU alumnus and Honorary University Fellow (2008). Dr Lam, a steadfast advocate for education, established the Chi Wah Foundation Ltd. in 1992, which also lends its name to the Learning Commons housing the Gallery.

In his opening speech, Professor Xiang Zhang highlighted the Gallery’s role as a dynamic repository of HKU’s identity, “Since its founding in 1911, HKU has grown from modest beginnings into one of Asia’s leading academic institutions. Its journey is marked by excellence, resilience, and a deep commitment to knowledge and service. As we approach our 115th anniversary, this Gallery stands as a tribute to that legacy. A place where history breathes, and the spirit of HKU shines.”

Dr Peter Wong echoed this sentiment, noting that the Gallery was a celebration of HKU’s rich heritage and enduring commitment to excellence. He expressed hope that it would inspire reflection, pride, and a renewed drive to build on the University’s legacy.

Dr Colin Lam emphasised the Gallery’s academic value, stating that he was especially pleased it also served as a learning space for students. Dr Lam noted that the Gallery preserved the spirit of reflection and inquiry that defines the University experience and expressed hope that it would inspire future scholars to explore, delve deeper, and contribute to the rich tapestry of knowledge that HKU continues to weave.
An Immersive Journey Through Time
The HKU History Gallery offers a dynamic exploration of the University’s legacy, blending cutting-edge digital exhibits with carefully preserved physical artifacts. Visitors can experience HKU’s evolution through interactive digital displays, where historic black-and-white photographs are brought to life with colourisation and motion using advanced projection technology.

Alongside these digital innovations, the Gallery features meticulously designed timeline panels that guide guests through pivotal moments in HKU’s history, enriched with archival captions and imagery. A curated collection of over 20 artifact replicas—including the University’s Coat of Arms and ceremonial Foundation Trowels—provides tangible connections to the past.Adjacent to the Gallery, an open study area continues to serve students, symbolising the connection between HKU’s heritage and its future. As the University nears its 115th anniversary, the Gallery stands as a testament to its enduring impact on Hong Kong, the nation, and the world.

At the close of the ceremony, Ms Flora Ng expressed her heartfelt thanks to the University for offering the Chi Wah Learning Commons Ground floor as the permanent home for the History Gallery, as well as to Dr Colin Lam for his generous support that made the project possible. She also acknowledged the dedicated teams from the University Archives, Libraries, Preservation and Conservation Division, ITS, and Estates Office for their efforts in crafting the immersive digital experience. The History Gallery's opening serves as an important way to celebrate HKU’s 115th Anniversary.
