Concurrent with his role as interim Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Business), Professor Chen Lin is the Stelux Professor in Finance and Chair Professor of Finance at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He previously held leadership roles as Associate Vice-President (Faculty Affairs) and Associate Dean (Research and Knowledge Exchange) at the HKU Business School. He is also the Director of the Centre for Financial Innovation and Development, Programme Director of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and Associate Director of the HKU-Standard Chartered Foundation FinTech Academy.

Before joining HKU, he was the Choh-Ming Li Professor in Finance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He was a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Finance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of California, Berkeley and an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh. He received his Ph.D., M.A. and MBA from Warrington College of Business Administration at the University of Florida, and BEng from the South China University of Technology. He is an international advisor to the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ AMSS, and an Academic Committee Member of the Institute of Chinese State-Owned Enterprises at Tsinghua University. He has been invited by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to nominate candidates for the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences since 2016.

Professor Lin’s research interests span banking and financial institutions, corporate finance, financial technology, entrepreneurship and innovation, finance and economic development. He has published extensively in top science, finance, accounting, management, law and economics journals. He is a recipient of multiple awards including the Jensen Prize (First Prize) for the Best Papers published in the Journal of Financial Economics in the Areas of Corporate Finance and Organizations, Bureau van Dijk prize in Corporate Finance and Chicago Quantitative Alliance Asian Academic Competition Award. He has an outstanding track record in securing major research grants, including the first National Social Science Fund of China Major Project hosted in Hong Kong, the National Natural Science Foundation of China Major Program, and the RGC’s Theme-based Research Grant.

Professor Lin actively contributes to public policy and academic advisory work. He serves on the Task Force on Promoting Web3 Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Expert Group of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), and the Fintech Advisory Group of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). He is an Advisory Council member and a research fellow at the Academy of Finance of HKMA, a member of Hang Seng Index Advisory Committee, an Advisory Group member of Cyberport FinTech Proof-of-Concept Subsidy Scheme, a member of Digital Assets Alliance. His works and views have been presented at institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, Asian Development Bank, Bank for International Settlement, US Federal Reserve, People’s Bank of China, Development Research Center of the State Council; and covered by international media such as the Bloomberg, CNNMoney, Economist, Forbes, Nature and Wall Street Journal.
