Dear students, colleagues and alumni,
We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po yesterday, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. On behalf of the University, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and to those injured in this devastating incident.
We know that some of our students, colleagues and alumni may have been affected. Since last night, CEDARS has been reaching out to affected students to offer support, while the University’s management has been working closely with HRO to assist impacted staff members. To date, we have confirmed the safety of all affected students and staff and remain in direct contact with them as the situation develops.
If you or someone you know has been affected, please don’t hesitate to seek help. Affected colleagues can contact HRO (email: prosper@hku.hk; tel: +852 3917 2422). Students in need of support can reach CEDARS via its WhatsApp hotline at +852 9390 2024.
We have contacted various government offices and expressed our full support for the relief efforts. Our Faculty of Medicine is mobilising staff and students to provide medical assistance where needed, and the Faculty of Social Sciences will offer counselling services. We stand ready to offer further support in any way we can.
Additionally, the University is exploring ways to support the wider community, including opening the Kadoorie Centre to those affected.
We call on all members of the University community to support the University’s relief efforts. We also urge staff and students to assist the Government should it require additional support.
Thank you for your care and support for one another at this difficult time.
Kind regards,
Professor Xiang Zhang
President and Vice-Chancellor
